Employment Outlook and Benefits
The VA has about 236,000 employees on its rolls. In the federal government, only the U.S. Department of Defense has a larger work force. Of the total number of VA employees, 215,000 are in the Veterans Health Administration; 13,000 work in the Veterans Benefits Administration; 1,600 work in the National Cemetery System; 3,200 are employed in the Veterans Canteen Service; and 400 in the Revolving Supply Fund. The remaining 3,700 employees work in various staff and facilities offices.
The VA is also a leader in hiring veterans. In addition to receiving its many benefits, you can go work for them. About 57 percent of all male employees are veterans, and some 16,000 women employees served in the armed forces.
At the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, you can break away from the traditional nine to five, forty-hour workweek without sacrificing the opportunities and benefits that come with job security. The VA lets you choose a schedule that accommodates your needs and lifestyle. You can vary your arrival and departure times, working longer but fewer days during your pay period. You may even be eligible to work from home on a regular or part-time basis. Working remotely gives you flexibility and helps you balance work and family responsibilities. You can also take your child to work every day. This is an option for some VA employees because of onsite child-care centers. Child-care programs are offered for children of different ages. Parents can enjoy lunch with their children in a learning environment that is safe and convenient to working parents.
